Plastic has become an important part of our daily lives because it is cheap, lightweight and convenient. However, the careless disposal of plastic has created a serious environmental problem, especially in oceans and coastal areas. India has a long coastline, and plastic waste from cities, rivers, beaches, fishing activities and other sources can reach the sea. India has a long coastline and is surrounded by the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. However, beneath the beauty of its oceans lies a growing environmental problem—plastic pollution. Every day, large quantities of plastic waste reach rivers, beaches and the sea. Plastic bags, bottles, food wrappers, fishing nets and other discarded materials often end up in the ocean, where they can remain for many years.
Plastic pollution is a silent crisis because its damage is often gradual and difficult to see. Marine animals such as turtles, fish, seabirds and dolphins may swallow plastic or become trapped in it. Tiny plastic particles called microplastics can enter the marine food chain. This can eventually affect people who depend on seafood and coastal resources for their livelihood and food.
In India, rivers and drains can carry plastic waste from cities and towns towards the sea. Beaches and coastal areas can also become polluted because of careless disposal of waste, tourism, fishing activities and inadequate waste management.
Coastal communities, fishermen and marine ecosystems are particularly affected. Plastic waste can damage fishing equipment, reduce the cleanliness of beaches and harm the natural habitats of marine organisms.
The solution requires action from individuals, communities, industries and governments. We can reduce single-use plastics, reuse materials, separate waste at home, recycle properly and keep rivers and beaches clean. Strong waste-management systems, responsible tourism and greater public awareness are also essential. Protecting the ocean today means protecting marine life, human health and the future of India’s coastal communities.
